How I Transformed an Early 1900's Kitchen into a Modern and Fun

Walking into the kitchen of this early 1900s historic home in Winston Salem was like stepping back in time. The mismatched features and outdated materials created an atmosphere that felt heavy and lifeless. But beneath that dated facade lay the potential for something extraordinary. The homeowner craved a space that not only functioned well but also radiated her spirited personality. So began an exciting journey to remodel the kitchen, merging modern amenities with the home's historical charm.

One remarkable feature of this kitchen was the stunning wood beadboard that spanned the entire room. Instead of hiding it under layers of paint or drywall, we chose to showcase it as a central element of our design. Keeping the beadboard preserved the kitchen's character while allowing us to enhance its charm.

We also incorporated timeless features to strike a balance between old and new. The white subway tile backsplash became a focal point—providing a clean and classic look that perfectly blended the historical aspects with a more contemporary vibe.

A Palette of Fun Colors

Choosing the right colors was crucial to our transformation. We selected a vibrant palette that infused energy into the space. The walls were painted in a bright shade called Pineapple Cream, which instantly made the room feel more welcoming.

For the cabinetry, we opted for Restoration Ivory for the upper cabinets and Tempe Star for the lower ones, both from Sherwin Williams. This striking combination not only added visual interest but also offered a fresh feel to the kitchen. According to a recent study, using bright colors in small spaces can make them appear larger and more inviting, making our choices even more fitting.

Cabinetry Overhaul with Budget in Mind

Flooring and Laundry Upgrades

To complete the kitchen transformation, we chose durable slate-look LVT flooring. This choice not only stood up to heavy kitchen traffic but also elegantly tied together all the elements in our design.

We didn't neglect the laundry area either. A fun, lively wall covering transformed this space, proving that even utility areas can boast creativity. Additionally, we installed functional shelving to maximize storage while maintaining a cohesive design.
